Riverland Packing Facility
Riverland, SA · Rooftop solar array sized to daytime cold-storage load

The challenge
The facility's cold rooms and packing line run heavily during daylight hours in harvest season, driving high daytime demand charges and consumption billed at commercial rates. The site had ample unshaded roof area but no existing solar generation, and management wanted a system that matched output to the site's actual operating pattern rather than an oversized array with poor self-consumption.
The approach
Esena reviewed twelve months of the site's NMI interval data to map consumption against harvest and off-season operating patterns, identifying the portion of load that occurs reliably during solar generation hours.
A rooftop array was engineered around available structural bays and shading-free roof sections, with string design and inverter selection matched to the site's three-phase supply and existing switchboard.
The proposal was modelled against the facility's actual tariff structure, including demand charges, so the operator could compare self-consumption value against export value before committing.
Indicative outcome
Project profile, indicative figures based on comparable regional commercial installations. Individual results vary and are subject to site assessment and metering data.
Facilities with a similar daytime-heavy load profile typically achieve high rates of direct self-consumption during harvest months, reducing grid-purchased energy and demand-charge exposure during peak packing periods. Off-season performance depends on how much of the site's remaining load coincides with solar generation hours.
