Melbourne Commercial Demand Reduction Upgrade
Melbourne, VIC · Battery storage under NSW PDRS BESS4 demand response pathway

The challenge
The site faced rising network demand charges tied to short peak-demand windows during operating hours. Management wanted to understand whether a battery could be configured not just for bill offset, but specifically to participate in a demand-response style activity, and what ongoing obligations that would create.
The approach
Esena's commercial team reviewed the site's demand profile against interval meter data to identify the timing and magnitude of peak-demand events driving network charges.
A battery system was specified with sufficient discharge capacity to address the identified peak windows, and the BESS4 demand-reduction activity requirements, including notification and response obligations, were explained in full before the client committed to the pathway.
System commissioning included configuration of the battery's control settings to prioritise demand-event response ahead of general arbitrage, in line with the activity's requirements.
Indicative outcome
Project profile, indicative figures based on comparable commercial demand-reduction installations. Individual results vary and are subject to site assessment, meter data and scheme rules current at installation.
Sites with a similar peaky demand profile typically see a reduction in demand-charge exposure during identified peak windows, alongside the applicable incentive value generated under the demand-reduction activity. The scale of benefit depends heavily on how consistent and predictable the site's peak-demand events are.
